Why Do We Celebrate Women’s Day on March 8?

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated every year on March 8. It is a day to honor the achievements of women in different areas like work, culture, and politics. It also reminds us of the ongoing fight for gender equality and women’s rights. But why was this date chosen? Let’s look at its history and importance.

History of Women’s Day

The idea of Women’s Day started in the early 1900s when women were fighting for better rights. They wanted fair wages, better working conditions, and the right to vote. The first National Women’s Day was celebrated in the United States on February 28, 1909. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America and was inspired by a protest in New York in 1908, where women demanded better working conditions.

In 1910, a German activist named Clara Zetkin suggested that every country should have a special day to support women’s rights. This idea was accepted, and different countries began celebrating Women’s Day on different dates.

Why March 8?

March 8 was chosen because of a big protest that happened in Russia in 1917. On this day, women workers in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) marched on the streets asking for “bread and peace.” They were struggling with food shortages and the effects of World War I. Their protest led to more demonstrations, which eventually made the Russian leader, Tsar Nicholas II, step down. After this, Russian women were given the right to vote. In 1921, the Soviet Union officially made March 8 Women’s Day.

Recognition Around the World

Over time, more countries began celebrating International Women’s Day. In 1977, the United Nations officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day. Today, people around the world observe this day through events, rallies, discussions, and campaigns that highlight gender equality and celebrate women’s achievements.

Conclusion

International Women’s Day is not just a day of celebration but also a day to push for gender equality. It reminds us of the progress made and the work that still needs to be done. Whether through supporting women’s rights, making policies fairer, or simply appreciating the contributions of women, this day continues to inspire people everywhere.
