March 8 was chosen because of a big protest that happened in Russia in 1917. On this day, women workers in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) marched on the streets asking for “bread and peace.” They were struggling with food shortages and the effects of World War I. Their protest led to more demonstrations, which eventually made the Russian leader, Tsar Nicholas II, step down. After this, Russian women were given the right to vote. In 1921, the Soviet Union officially made March 8 Women’s Day.
Over time, more countries began celebrating International Women’s Day. In 1977, the United Nations officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day.
