Kerala is getting ready to welcome India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train. This is a big step forward for Indian Railways and will make night travel more comfortable and faster for passengers.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train is a major upgrade to India’s railway system. Unlike the current Vande Bharat Express trains that only have chair seating, this new train will have sleeper berths for longer, overnight trips. The train is being made by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and will have 16 coaches. These will include 11 AC 3-tier, 4 AC 2-tier, and 1 AC 1-tier coach, offering a total of 823 beds for passengers.
This new train is designed to give passengers a better travel experience. Each bed will have a reading light, charging point, a small snack table, and holders for phones or magazines. The train is built to reduce noise, and the front end is made stronger to protect in case of a crash. It also has a modern safety system called Kavach, which helps avoid collisions.
Other useful features include stainless steel body parts, fire-safe materials (as per EN 45545 rules), special sections for people with disabilities, automatic doors, smart inter-coach doors, and safe, easy-to-use toilets. There will also be USB charging points with reading lights, public announcement systems, and space for luggage.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to start running by the end of January 2025. Because the train has more weight due to water tanks and sleeper beds, it will run at a top speed of 130 km/h. This limit has been set by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). Before the train is open to the public, it will be tested thoroughly. Tests will include using sandbags to mimic the weight of people and checking the train at full speed. The Railway Safety Commissioner will oversee these tests.
Kerala was chosen as the starting point for this train because of its growing importance in India’s railway network. This new train will help people travel faster across southern India and is expected to improve tourism and business in the region.
India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train starting from Kerala is a big step in making train travel better and more modern. With top-class safety, comfort, and smart features, this train is ready to change how people travel long distances at night in India.
